Asia’s agri-food systems face interconnected threats. Rising temperatures, erratic rainfall, and extreme weather events harm crop yields, livestock production, and fisheries. These conditions jeopardise the livelihoods of millions of smallholder farmers who are essential to the region's food supply. Many also lack access to finance and climate-resilient local procurement systems, hindering their adoption of climate-smart practices and the provision of nutritious food for all. Participants will gain insight into how philanthropy and innovative finance can drive integrated solutions to strengthen agri-food systems, empower farming communities, and protect the environment.
This session will spotlight on issues that will define health and science in the 21st century, with a focus on Asia. Amongst various challenges, three key issues stand out: (i) nutrition and food security, (ii) capacity to combat infectious diseases and (iii) mosquito-borne infections. Chaired by Sir Jeremy Farrar, Chief Scientist at the World Health Organization, the session will seek to deepen conversations on levers of change and opportunities for greater collective impact in Asia.

Asia is home to some of the world’s biggest impact opportunities and challenges that will determine a significant part of our Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) within the three decades. By driving private action in public interest, philanthropy has constantly been an effective force in punching above its weight to make catalytic impact in areas where public or market players cannot. Yet despite the immense potential of philanthropic capital, changemakers and ground traction, the existing scale of impact is nowhere near what we need to meet our net-zero and SDG targets. It begs the question – what is the essential catalyst we need that can propel Asia’s philanthropy towards bigger, bolder and better impact?
The roundtable session challenges us to examine the state of the infrastructures that supports both our ecosystem and organisations in Asia, and proposes the idea of “catalytic capacity” as a critical driver to scale philanthropic impact. Our roundtable of distinguished thought leaders will provide insights on what it takes to build Asia’s engine for good, drawing on grounded experiences from Asia, with Asians.
